Description
According to a report by Information Commissioner Suzanne Legault, the RCMP withheld and destroyed records on the long-gun registry after a request was made for them in 2012. The report calls this a violation of the Access to Information Act and recommended charges be laid.
The Conservative government has not followed the recommendations, but instead put an amendment in the omnibus Bill C-59, that would backdate the law eliminating the registry and make the RCMP’s actions legal. The OPP are now investigating Legault’s findings.
