Over 80 protesters were detained and many more teargassed by police at May Day demonstrations in Montreal. The protests, which were organized by anti-capitalist group CLAC (Convergence des luttes anticapitalistes) were declared illegal by police just as they had begun in the early evening. Police launched teargas into the crowds, hitting many participants and bystanders, including children. There were several violent clashes between police and protesters, with 27 arrested on criminal charges.
